Providing Sport 4 All Youth
The “Sport 4 All Youth” concept is based on the concept of “Sport for All” that was established by the Council of Europe in 1966 to engage Europeans in all forms of recreational and competitive physical activity.
The paper Benefits of Providing SPORT 4 ALL YOUTH: Evidence that quality youth sport programs that remove the participation barriers of cost and transportation will help reduce crime, drug use, depression, and obesity was developed so community sport leaders would have an evidence base to secure municipal policy support, grants, sponsorships, and donations to provide “Sport 4 All Youth” programs.
The most important goal of “Sport 4 All Youth” programs is to make young people feel safe, welcome, competent, connected, empowered, and special in the sporting environment, which, for example, is how many youth feel in street gangs.
By providing “Sport 4 All Youth” programs in municipalities, community sport leaders will be providing youth, particularly those from low-income families, with opportunities to choose participating in organized sport instead of negative social activities.
