Sportability builds physical literacy among 2- to 9-year-olds by nurturing them through the Active Start and FUNdamentals stages of Canadian Sport for Life
The program helps young children of all abilities develop skills that will enable them to enjoy many different sports and physical activities for life.
Sportability can be a stand-alone program at a recreation facility, school or child care centre, or it can be integrated into other programs.
The instructors learn - in a 4-hour training session with a turn-key Instructor’s Guide - that their role is to facilitate non-stop activity in a safe environment and not to do much teaching.
Here are some testimonials from City of Toronto part-time recreation staff:
- “The training was amazing” 16-year-old female instructor
- “I’ve never worked with children. This will be great” 17-year-old male instructor
- “Every child should be in Sportability” Instructor and mother
With a few tips, encouragement and positive reinforcement from the instructor, children explore, experience and learn at their-own-pace.
The curriculum of 30- to 60-minute lesson plans, requiring minimal equipment, empowers children to develop movement skills and games skills to both sides of their bodies, strength, flexibility, mental skills and a basic understanding of nutrition.
Here are some testimonials from City of Toronto programs:
- “I can do it” 3-year-old girl
- “I want to do Sportability every day” 8-year-old boy
- “My instructor is great. I really like her” 5-year-old girl
- “Nobody laughs at me. I’m good at it” 7-year-old boy
- “I feel welcome here” 9-year-old boy in a wheelchair
